What kind of food will I eat?

We can cater for vegetarians and most allergies, and volunteers can help to write the menu for the week based on what they would like to eat. Our cook Bernard loves sharing cooking and learning new recipes, so if there is something you would like to create in the kitchen then you are very welcome.

There are many excellent restaurants and road-side fast food joints (called ‘chop bars’) in the area, and volunteers sometimes go out for meals. This is a great opportunity to try more local dishes like banku, tilapia or goat kebabs which we do not eat at the centre. Please note that any meals eaten outside the centre are not covered by the expenses you pay to Future Leaders UCC.

Monday
Fresh fruit, toast and jam
French fries with guacamole and mango salsa
Pasta Jollof and fried chicken (Jollof is a very popular and tasty Ghanaian sauce made from tomatoes onions and spices)

Tuesday
Porridge
Spicy chicken soup
Chow mein with green beans

Wednesday
French toast/eggy bread
Egg stew (hard to explain but very tasty)
Plantain parties (Bernard’s signature dish, a bit like onion bhajis but made from plantain and served with spicy bean stew)

Thursday
Fresh fruit, toast and jam
Omelette sandwich
Beef stew with mashed potatoes

Friday
Banana pancakes
Plantain crisps with guacamole, tomato salsa and mango salsa
BBQ chicken, onion rings, fried rice and salad

On weekends most volunteers leave Accra to travel, so they do not eat at the centre. However if you do choose to stay then your meals will be provided.

Saturday
English breakfast (baked beans, toast, egg, sausage)
Jacket potato and salad
Palava (vegetable stew made from cocoyam leaves) with chicken and rice

Sunday
Fresh fruit, toast and jam
Beans on toast
